How does the Pyroclassic IV work?
The Pyroclassic IV is the easiest woodburner to start- thanks to the special start-up air feature acting like the old fashioned bellows for fanning a fast fire. When the fire is fully developed you no longer need the start-up air, so simply shut the slide with your finger. The result is automatic.
A fast fire develops near the door with air supplied from above. The fire slows down by itself as it moves back in the firebox away from the air supply. The only other control on the fire depends on the weather. Load one, or two or at the most three logs ie you control the fire by the amount of firewood that you load into it remembering that the massive ceramic fire box stores excess heat to be released for many hours. Anymore and you will be opening the windows.
The door allows you to insert logs in the only correct way for burning wood – lengthwise. Wood grows from the ground up – not parallel to the ground. For best results you should it from end to end, along the grain. Across the grain is nature’s best insulation, good for building houses and to resist fire. The fire box shape automatically lines up the log to meet pre-heated primary air head on. The secondary air must be very hot to be of any use. That’s why the fire draws it in from under the unit, heats it on the back plate and superheats it in stainless steel tubes passing over the fire. Its volume depends on draught, high fire, high draught, more air – low fire, less air.
